Chased On Vacation and told of Unsolved Murders in del rio, Texas – A True Story

Don’t Think It Can’t Happen To You!

I just read a hub that brought back memories of being chased, memories of bad lands and worse people.
On a Two Week Vacation

Mom and Dad both had a two week vacation and, when they picked-up me and my brothers from our grandparents. We were going to drive (Dad was going to drive) across the country and he had a list of places to see, before we went to live with them in South Bend, Indiana.

Dad drove straight south to Mobile, Alabama, where we went swimming in the gulf. There were all kinds of shells and creatures in the water. My brothers and I wanted to take some home with us, so, mom got a gallon glass jar for us and we caught some creatures and what looked like a snail shell, and filled the jar with water from the gulf. Within half an hour, a creature came out of the snail shell and filled the jug smothering everything else. Dad stopped for us to dump the dead creatures, then on the way again.

We headed west from Mobile, Alabama, stopping to eat and stretch in or near New Orleans, Louisiana, than another couple of hours we arrived at a beautiful lake with a sandy beach, we were at Lake Charles, Louisiana.
Lake Charles Louisiana

It was so hot and humid and, the car did not have air conditioning and was running hot. Dad let us go swimming in the crystal clear lake while the car cooled off; I had never seen anything like it. You could see the bottom even in four foot of water.

In the town of Lake Charles, dad had the car check for a hose leak and we went inside the restaurant attached to the Garage. My brothers finished before anyone else and wanted to go outside and play.

The car radiator hose was replaced and we got into the car, Mom did not seem to notice that my brothers had a shoe box placed between them on the seat, and they were both unusually quiet.
Chirp, chirp

We had not gone but a few miles, when we heard the chirp, chirp. Mom said “ok boys! What have you got in the box?” Darrell said “But Mom, the man said we could have all we wanted.”

Mom yelled, WHAT HAVE YOU GOT IN THE BOX? Darrell reluctantly opened the box and crickets went everywhere. We stopped the car and had to take everything out to get the crickets out.

I don’t know how much longer it took to get to Houston, Texas but Mom and Dad were exhausted and we had only been on the road for one whole day.
Lost in Houston

Dad found a motel and after a good night’s sleep, we got up early the next morning and the boys wanted to go outside and play.

We saw a huge bug on the sidewalk, bigger than any I had ever seen. My brothers began following it down/up the street, I ran inside to tell mom that they were chasing a bug, by the time Mom got outside my brothers were out of sight.

Dad drove around the block and we did not see them, Mom called the police from the motel. A police car came out to look for them. Dad, Mom and me went around the block again and Dad pulled up to the curb with a hedged between the sidewalk and an alley, we heard Tony crying in the alley and Darrel who was only a year older say to him, “don’t try lidda brudder, I’ll tate tear of you.” Mom, lost it, and she cried, and cried.

Dad got out of the car walked up to the hedge telling them to stay where they were and we went around and picked them up. They stayed close to Mom, Dad and me from then on.
Remember the Alamo

After Mom called the police to tell them we found my brothers, we headed west to San Antonio. Dad wanted us to visit the Alamo.
The Alamo

Our visit to the Alamo was impressive, I think Dad read a lot about the Alamo and wanted to see it for a long time, he kept pointing out points of interest but he also wanted someone to share it with, and now he had a family. (Years later, I often heard Mom say that Dad married her so he could have the three of us for his children.)

We arrived in Del Rio one early afternoon, in the 1955 Plymouth Belvedere was overheating again. Dad found a garage with a restaurant attached. He took the car into the garage, Mom and we kids went to get something to eat and drink.
Needing Car Repairs

The car repair was minor. It seemed the other garage did not have the hose clamp on tight enough.

Dad had joined us in the restaurant, and the mechanic parked the car in front where we could see it, then brought the keys and handed them to Dad and struck up a conversation.

As they were talking two cars pulled up and parked next to our car.It made us very uncomfortable when the six young men were looking inside our car as they passed by and came into the restaurant.

Dad was telling the mechanic we were headed to Carlsbad, New Mexico and asked if he knew of any place where we could spend the night between the two places. The mechanic, advised Dad because it was near dusk, to stay in Del Rio till morning, because, but stopped talking when three of the young men walked up within hearing distance, the mechanic changed the subject.

The three men ordered sandwiches to go and left in one of the cars and the other three ordered the same thing but sat down at a table near the door.

Dad paid the check and we left.Mom felt better that three of the men left and the other three were still inside, as we pulled onto the highway.

The Chase Was On

Just a few miles down the road, dad had turned on his head lights and there ahead of us was the car with the three young men, it was turned sideways, blocking both lanes of the two lane highway.

Dad, who never drove over the speed limit, suddenly put the gas pedal to the floor. My brothers and I got in the floor to brace for the crash, when dad slammed on the brakes and our car did a spin and headed in the opposite direction, again he stepped on the gas and we were headed back to Del Rio.

We saw lights coming toward us and again we braced for a collision and Mom said as it passed us that’s, the other car. And Dad said he could see the lights in the rearview as they turned around and were coming after us.

We had taken our cokes with us from the restaurant and they were in glass bottles. Dad told us to throw them out the window so they would break on the highway behind us, maybe that would slow them down.
Safely Back in Del Rio

We got back to Del Rio and the garage, the mechanic saw us and had us pull into the garage and he closed the doors and turned off the lights, then Dad and the mechanic watched as the two cars pulled into the parking lot, then not seeing our car, they left again the way they just came from. We stayed there for what seemed like hours, just in case they were watching the garage.
The Stories of Unsolved Murders

The mechanic then told us of numerous murders that had taken place on that deserted stretch of highway we were on. He told us how fortunate we were, that we came back.

The story in the Lubbock Avalanche Journal published Sunday, February 5, 2005, about the shooting, stabbing, rape and robbery of six family members, after five were left dead on April 16, 1968, on a mile-long stretch of U.S. Highway a part of the winding 90-mile highway between Del Rio and Sonora.

According to the article this family’s murder remains the state’s longest unsolved mass killing. This story is a reminder of how fortunate we were.

Nightmare Vacation

The Vacation in the Nightmare Mountain Cabin That Just Didn’t Work Out

I was so excited for the past three months about my three day mountain cabin vacation in Western North Carolina. My plan was to arrive on a Saturday morning, get supplies for the weekend, unpack, settle in and do some shopping. Maybe some reading and writing too on the back porch which overlooked a peaceful gurgling river. Sunday I was going to hike a local mountain, and Monday I was going to do a 2-hour horseback riding tour in the mountains, and Tuesday morning I would return home.

Let me make a note that this is not a “green” hub. It is a vent (which by the way I have gotten over and recovered as I write this hub) and want to share this adventure with you. The major lesson I learned through this is to ask questions about the place you want to stay at. If the Owner doesn’t like questions then move on. I am hearing from other travelers that mountain properties are a hit or miss.

Two days before the trip I contacted the Owner of the cabin via e-mail, at his request, to find out if I could check-in earlier at 11 a.m. instead of the standard 2 p.m. He e-mailed me back and told me if nobody else was renting the place I could arrive early but I would have to check with the caretaker of the property first to see if her schedule would allow it. The caretakers live a few blocks from the property and the Owner lives in another state.

The caretaker Jill did not respond to that email. So I called and left her a voicemail. Still no response, so I was not sure what time to leave Saturday morning. But I don’t sweat it – I leave at 10 a.m. It is only a 2-hour drive. At 10:30 a.m. I get a phone call from the Owner telling me that caretaker Bill will meet me at the cabin to give me the keys, because caretaker Jill left her cell phone in Charlotte and that’s why she never returned my phone call. Okay dokey. I guess she left her computer in Charlotte as well because she didn’t show any courtesy to respond to the email either.
On a positive note, here is a quick video that I filmed — At least there was a beautiful flowing stream in the backyard. Click to see and hear this lovely moun
At least there was a nice view in the backyard. Click on the quick video above to see and hear this stream in action. It is very soothing.
This is the view from the balcony porch, outside the bedsheet curtains. The gurgling river in the back yard was the best thing about the cabin. The internet photos of this backyard river is what made me decide to choose this place.

Doomed From the Start

I arrive at the cabin and Bill is waiting there to let me in and gave me the key. As soon as I walked into the place the strong musty smell of mildew hits me. I took off my shoes and walked around barefooted and noticed the floor felt gritty and sandy. I took a broom and swept the entire living room, kitchen, and foyer floors and came up with a small pile of dirt. At least now I can walk barefoot on a smooth clean floor. I paid a $35 cleaning fee in advance and I am the one cleaning the place.

I settled in on the hard and lumpy Futon, which was located in the dark paneled living room where none of the lamps worked, watching Pollyanna on the Hallmark channel. The old decrepit ceiling fan is grinding away. Both ceiling fans in the place must be about 40 years old. There is a window-unit air conditioner in the bedroom, which is doing a good job of cooling the place and the “Change Filter” light is on.

All of a sudden out of nowhere a big giant hornet came flying towards the balcony sliding glass doors and was bouncing around. I am thinking, how the heck did a hornet get inside? All the windows are closed, the door is closed, there are no vents in the ceiling, no vents in the floors, no chimney or fireplace. I do not want to tangle with a hornet. They are mean. This hornet was all black with a red tint to it, so I know it was one of the mean ones.

I got up and opened the sliding glass door and fortunately the creature flew out. I didn’t actually see the creature fly out, but it did seem to disappear. When any stinging insect is in your house – you will know it. They are not quiet nor do they stay still. And they like hanging around windows where the light is. So I kept wondering, how did that little bugger get in? Will another hornet come buzzing around?
Kitchen Surprise

I proceed into the kitchen and noticed the cooking utensils next to the stove had a film of dust on them. I couldn’t stand it, so with warm soapy water I began washing the utensils, utensil holder, the teapot, the coffee pot, and a canister on the counter. Shined them right up, I sure did. I grabbed the second canister and it felt heavy, so I opened it up and noticed it was half filled with sugar. All the ants in there stopped cold when the lid was opened. I was mortified and closed the lid quickly. I know they are just ants but my goodness you don’t expect to find bugs in your sugar container. But at this cabin I guess it’s a part of the experience.

At the sliding glass doors there hung some bedsheet-like white curtains. They were so see-through that at night, even if the lamps did work, everyone passing by would be able to see me in my nightgown in the living room. That’s just not enough privacy for me. The bathroom was located next to the sliding glass balcony doors, and if anyone sits on the toilet and looks to their left, the neighbor’s balcony is in plain view, so the neighbors have a plain view of anyone sitting on the toilet unless the bathroom door is shut. Now that would make some fine vacation story-telling, wouldn’t it?

Travel vs. Vacation: What’s the Difference?

I try not to mix up the terms vacation and travel. When it gets right down to it these words, often used interchangeably, mean very different things.

People often talk about traveling in Mexico while sipping their margarita on the private beach owned by their all-expense-paid resort. This isn’t travel. It’s vacation. There is a very important and distinct difference.

Vacation and travel are different but both great, please don’t take this as a declaration that one is better than the other.

What is Vacation?

To me a vacation is going somewhere with the intention of skiing, surfing, theme parks, or lying on the beach. They’re week long getaways to all-inclusive destination with a focus on relaxation and fun.

That’s really the key. Relaxation. A vacation is an opportunity to go somewhere new (or somewhere else familiar) and lazy about, drink some fruity drinks. It’s an opportunity to get away from the day-to-day stresses of life and enjoy some free time. But I don’t learn on vacation. It doesn’t make me a better person, expand my horizons, or help me develop new ideas. To me vacation should be easy.

This doesn’t, of course, mean vacations are in any way a bad thing. I love vacationing. Theme parks and beaches are among my favorite destinations, but I do recognize these activities for what they are. Resorts, cruises, and house rentals are usually vacation.

You can Instagram it, smack a filter on it, but that doesn’t make it travel.

What is travel?

What is travel? Other than the act of transit?

Travel isn’t usually easy. Travel is discovering cultures, expanding horizons, staying in crappy hostels and backpacking. It’s challenge. It’s work. This is the kind of adventure that leaves you with a lasting sense of awe. For the most part it isn’t relaxing.

People travel to experience a different way of living. To try (and see) new things. The hurdles you jump while traveling can have a serious impact on how you perceive and understand the world. People often talk about the very personal benefits they get from travel, beyond simply the experiences. It opens your eyes, you learn who you are, it will help you discover new skills, and gives you perspective.

If you’re going to a new place to discover how they see the world, you can probably safely describe it as travel.

The Hybrid

To be fair, you can definitely vacation while you travel. When I was younger my family and I went on a three week trip to Europe. I can safely define two of the three weeks travel (museums, historic locations, trying new foods) but we spent the last week in a rented house on an island in Greece. During this time we went on a day-cruise, spent time snorkeling and on the beach, and relaxed. This is 100% vacation. It didn’t teach me anything or make me a more cultured person, but man was it relaxing and memorable.

In fact, for a great trip I would recommend taking a vacation from your travel. I know that sounds weird but if you think about it, it does make sense. If you’re spending three months on the road plan for at least a day or two a month to relax. Whether it’s on a beach, in the hostel, in a park, or wherever you find relaxation. Trust me, after too many days of no sleep you’re going to need a break.
Travel is Great, So is Vacation

So What’s the Difference?

No country is a “vacation-spot” or “travel-spot.” You can vacation or travel in any country, and in any city. For example: A vacation in Mexico would be staying in an all-inclusive resort in Cancun. Travel in Mexico would be staying in Mexico City and exploring the streets, meeting locals, and probably getting lost.

Some trips have elements of travel and elements of vacation. But in the end your trip is what you make of it. You can vacay or travel and nobody is judging you, but you have to know in advance what you want out of your trip. Similarly, your wanderlust may not be for old churches and getting to know a culture. It may be for beaches or parties. To each their own.

Luxury Vacation Travel For A Fraction Of The Cost

Sometimes, if you are not careful, you end up paying a small fortune for a luxurious holiday. However, you tend to pay less when you make detailed plans.

The first thing you need to do, is to devise clear goals. Going there to learn about the history and culture? Or you are traveling for leisure? There are many different goals. Try to reconcile your needs with those of your travel companions. Tension can be avoided if you talk it over with your pals. Work on your traveling goals together.

The details become clearer once you get your goals down on paper. For example, if you are traveling to relax, focus more on that. Who will you be traveling with? Are there any additional tools you need to bring along? How many days do you intend to spend golfing? If you are going to golf, do you intend to do any business while you are golfing?

Having a range of activities will help prevent boredom. For example, on top of golfing, you can also plan for a leisure day at the beach, or a massage at the SPA. When one enjoyable moment follows another, there is nothing that could possibly spoil your mood!

Finally, going on luxury vacations usually mean that it’s time to pamper yourself. Distractions are abundant, so you must be careful not to let them spoil your vacation. Just focus on enjoying the trip. Peace and quiet is great for healing the spirit. So while traveling, just relax!

Once you have made up your mind to go on a luxury vacation, you will now have to pick a destination. Destinations differ in terms of facilities, scenery, and price. But there will be a place that will appeal to your own personal preferences.

When we talk about luxury vacations, we are referring to villas. Holiday resorts don’t come into the picture. Villas are much larger, and definitely better equipped with facilities. Besides being well facilitated, villas are also very exclusive. Because of exclusivity, be prepared to pay a higher price for the accommodation. For the price that you will be paying, you will get the whole villa to yourself.

Top luxury destinations include those in highly developed countries like the US and the UK. The main reason why such villas are the most expensive is because real estate is costly in these countries. Therefore, it is common to have to pay a premium price for villas in these nations.

If you find it too costly to have luxury holidays in US or UK, try staying in an Asian villa. You will be pleasantly surprised by the prices that you can get.

In addition, you will also see sights that you don’t normally see in western destinations. For example, you can visit temples and learn more about the eastern culture. Villas in Bali are well known for being spacious, well facilitated, and reasonably priced. Even the look and feel of the majestic villas is different. You can choose to live in small one room villas, or you can opt to stay in large 4 to 5 room villas.

You don’t have to spend a bomb to stay in a luxurious villa. Just make an online search to see what comes up. You may also wish to check out destinations such as Hawaii, New Zealand, and the Caribbean.

Great Travel And Vacation Ideas For The Family

Nothing in the world beats a family beach vacation, whether it’s at a deluxe resort, or a simple campground on the beach.

Below, are some ways you might do your vacation:

Caribbean Beach Vacation 1. Families flock to Jamaica and the Dominican Republic for their all inclusives with watersports and kids clubs. 2. At some resorts the kids programs are outstanding, with separate leaders and activities for many different age groups. 3. Pool complexes – some resorts have waterparks. 4. The prices can be high, although they will drop from May to December. Hurricane season is in those months as well, although most resorts offer weather guarantees.

The Atlantis is one of my favorites.

The accommodations here range from moderately priced to very expensive. Families on vacation here should consider staying in the Coral Towers, which is the most centrally located tower at Atlantis. The Coral Towers is also closest to the Predator Lagoon and the Lagoon Pool as well. Lot’s of fun!

Parents will adore this vacation because Atlantis has two different programs for children, the Aqua Tots program and the Discovery Channel Camp. The Aqua Tots program was designed for children 3 years old and up, while the discovery camp is for kids 4 – 12 years old and ranges from a 1 hour program to one that includes lunch and even dinner.

Mexico Beach Vacation Even though tourists zip down to Mexico and do what they want at a condo or small hotel, beach vacations at all inclusive resorts are still the best way to go for families.

The Riviera Maya, an hour south of Cancun, has the second largest barrier reef in the world. It also has many activities for families to explore outside of the resort. You can rent a car, hire a taxi, or even take a public bus.

Hawaii Beach Vacation When you go to Hawaii, you shouldn’t expect to find all inclusive resorts in the Aloha state. Hawaii is known for lush luxury resorts, such as the Grand Wailea on Maui, or the properties on the Big Island’s Kohala Coast.

To find more affordable options in Hawaii, the Waikiki Beach area is breathtaking, fun for the entire family, and offers several different lodging options.

With plenty of options available to you and your family, vacation ideas on the beach are always something to look forward to. There are many beaches out there, all you have to do is find the one that fits your needs – and your budget.

Travel tips, it is highly recommended that you take out travel insurance before embarking on any vacation. Unfortunately, without insurance, you have little recourse if you have to suddenly cancel your trip due to illness or other unforeseeable circumstances. Realize that resorts like this will expect to be paid no matter what. However, with travel insurance, you can recoup some or all of your costs if travel and vacation plans change. Travel insurance is very affordably priced, so please check out your options.
